A freelance journalist based in Michigan, I write about the environment, cities, history and art—but whatever the topic, I’m a sucker for a wild story or an original idea. I’ve explored how open data can change our understanding of slavery, why cities need both toilets and trees, battles won and lost in the war on sitting and animals’ place in history. I’m a regular contributor to Smithsonian and Atlas Obscura and I’ve also written for the Boston Globe, Slate, The Guardian and Nature Conservancy. I’m currently at work on a book about invasive species in an era of global change, for Oxford University Press.
